DMail supports the appropriate Internet Standards such as:

· Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP).
· Extended SMTP(ESMTP), including ETRN request.
· Post Office Protocol (POP3) for broad interoperability with various email clients.
· Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) for sending and receiving messages with rich content types.
· Supports RFC 1891 through RFC 1894 for Delivery Status Notification between servers.
· Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) for Authenticated SMTP: User name and password of user look up in LDAP
· Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).
Easy Installation and Administration The DMail Mail Server provides several wizards and utilities making it  easy and convenient to  install, setup and administer the server. The server is designed to run largely unattended to, as far as is possible, eliminate  ongoing management overhead.
DMail: Easy Installation and Setup: The DMSetup setup application wizard will guide you through the initial setup and installation of the DMail Mail Server. This makes installation and setup a snap and means you can have your DMail server running in minutes. It can also be used to simplify upgrading to a new version of DMail or for removing the DMail applications.
Easy Server Administration and Configuration:

The DMail Mail Server provides several options to allow you to administer the server with ease. DMail is highly configurable without recompilation.

Graphical User Interface: DMAdmin is a graphical user interface for managing your DMail Server and its configuration settings. It runs on the Windows 95 or Windows NT platform. It is automatically installed and then started by DMSetup on these platforms. It can also be used to control a Unix version of DMail/DPOP remotely and allows you to monitor what the server is doing as it is actually happening.

Command Line Utility: DMail also provides an easy-to-use command line utility (Tellpop and Tellsmtp ) for managing all aspects of your DMail Server e.g. changing configuration settings, monitoring the current status of the servers to see how many connections are in use etc.

Remote Administration: You can administer the server remotely using either DMAdmin or Tellpop and Tellsmtp.
High Performance, Efficiency and Scalability The DMail Server is very fast delivering - higher performance, high scalability and  very efficient use of resources.

High Performance and Efficiency:

The DMail Servers advanced design provides faster interactive response times for users under light and heavy loads, allowing users to connect and read mail much more quickly.

DMail Mail Server uses significantly less load and memory usage per connection, providing better performance and more efficient use of resources, particularly valuable under heavy load or where resources are limited.

Additionally dedicated internal multi-threading provides greater efficiency. Single process servers handle all users connections.

High Scalability: DMail Mail Server is both a highly efficient and highly scaleable mail server solution which can handle a large number of concurrent email client sessions. Systems with 500,000 client accounts and many hundreds of concurrent connections are quite achievable even with relatively modest hardware.
Low machine utilization
The DMail Mail Server was written in C... this means that the programmers concentrated on writing fast and efficient code. As a result, DMail  requires only 10MB of disk space
and a Pentium 90 to operate.
MAIL SECURITY - Controlling Client Access:
The DMail Mail Server provides a wide range of user authentication options to allow you to   ensure convenient and secure access to your server:
Valid Username:
First the client must use a valid username. This is limited by a wildcard list of valid names in the configuration file. This allows you to allow access to specified domains, sub-domains or users only or to exclude specified domains, sub-domains or users.
Restriction by IP_Name or Number of the client machine: The from address ip_name or number can be limited using wildcard lists in the configuration file. This provides added protection from hackers or unauthorized access by controlling which machines access to the server can be obtained from.

Supports Standard NT or UNIX password Files:
The DMail Mail Server Supports Standard NT or Unix password Files.
The username/password combination must be valid. This can mean a valid Unix or NT user/password.
LDAP Authentication
DMail Mail Server includes a module (LDAPAUTH) that enables you to authenticate against an LDAP server rather than standard NT or Unix password files. LDAP allows users of LDAP enabled clients (such as Netscape Communicator and MS Outlook) to locate LDAP directory information including name, phone number, mail address, organization, and more. With an LDAP enabled client, you can list all users at a site, browse for users who meet specific criteria, or modify your own information in an LDAP directory.
External authentication applications:
DMail External Authentication allows you to use or create your own authentication application for checking users and passwords or to add special connection restrictions such as limiting access from certain classes of users or users of certain machines to specific times of day. For example student users on laboratory machines may not be allowed to read mail during work hours. An example external authentication program is provided with DPOP.
Fast Disaster Recovery,   Transient failure protection.

Automated Server Monitoring, Restart and Notification:

24 Hour Monitoring of your DMail server, restart and notification are essential for your business critical email service . Your DMail Server provides a built in Monitoring utility DWatch to monitor your DMail Server. In addition NetWin provides a powerful stand alone Internet Services Monitor - Internet WatchDog,   for  advanced monitoring of all your Internet Services.
Fast Disaster Recovery
Your DMail  configuration file is easily copied for safe storage offsite (e.g. another office). Should the first office become unavailable (e.g. a fire, earthquake, etc.) this file may be used to regenerate the complete  installation.

Protection from transitory failure
When messages are sent to DMail Server it does not "accept" them until they are secured to disk. As a consequence, messages cannot be lost if the machine running DMail fails.

DWatch - Built in 24 Hour Mail Server Monitoring, Restart and Notification.

DMail Includes a utility (DWatch ) that periodically checks the servers are running. If for some reason they died abnormally then DWatch will restart them, and optionally archive their log file for later analysis and email the Administrator. This helps to ensure 24*7 hour service and early identification and resolution of any problem.
Add- On: Internet WatchDog - Advanced easy-to-use Monitoring and  Remote Notification of alarm conditions of all your Internet Services.
Internet WatchDog is an extensive, easy-to-use, monitoring utility that can be purchased as an add-on to your Mail Server. Internet WatchDog does a lot more than just monitor your email server, it can monitor a virtually unlimited number of all types of Internet or Intranet Services including Web, Mail, News, FTP etc. It provides; performance monitoring, full real time TCPIP logging to pinpoint any problem and operating statistics, can run scripts, restart services and will notify you of alarm conditions - alerting you via desktop alarm, alpha-page, phone message, or mail when there's a problem.
S
Full Logging of information and error messages:

Want to Know , Who, When and What - you need to look no further than the transaction and message logs  DMail can maintain. To meet varying information requirements the DMail Mail Server provides three levels of logging: Error, Information and Debug.

  • error: the only information written will be errors, warnings, socket read and write information and minimal progress information.
  • information, this setting gives much more progress information, as well as file open and close calls.
  • debug: as well as the info information, this setting gives a whole lot of internal status information, function calls...all sorts of stuff.

To prevent  logs from filling up the disk, DMail will automatically rotate log files.

True Multiple Domain Support:
DMail: Multiple domain support allows administrators to support multiple companies, or domains, on a single server. For example this allows the Internet provider to cost-effectively host multiple organizations on a single server with multiple virtual servers.

DMail supports two alternatives for achieving this:

-Multiple IP numbers on a single machine:

-Multiple Mail Domains on a Single IP number - Suffix Based Virtual Domains:

Multiple IP numbers on a single machine:
Where a single machine is run with multiple IP numbers, one for each domain. It is fairly easy to add multiple IP numbers for a single machine, up to 255 per interface is fairly straightforward. 1024 is usually possible with minor patches.
Multiple Mail Domains on a Single IP number - Suffix Based Virtual Domains:

As an alternative to having multiple IP numbers virtual domains can be setup by asking users of the virtual domain to connect using email usernames of the form user/company1 and user/company2.
Gathering connection statistics
DPOP can optionally provide a per connection log of client usage statistics for use in charging clients etc.
DMail Anti-Spam features Effective protection of your system and users from the increasing volumes "Spam" and  increasing sophistication of "Spammers" is essential.
DMail has a host of features for protecting the Mail Server from Spammers - including leading edge spam detection and blocking and IP-level relay restrictions:

IP-Level Restrictions:

Most Important a Mail Server should have relaying restrictions imposed on it. This protects your system against Spammers using your organization's Internet messaging server to launch their junk mail by allowing administrators to configure the system to only accept mail that originates from local users or that is destined for local users. Relay protection can be turned off or on .

You can;

- Allow relaying only from a subset of IP numbers. This applies to the sender's IP number.
- Permit exceptions to forward_from_ip for certain domains. This applies to the domain given in the envelope's RCPT line.
- Permit exceptions to forward_from_ip for recent POP users. This applies to the user given by the envelope's FROM line.

Mail Monitoring - Mail Bombs:
DMail also allows restrictions to be placed on the volume of messages coming from a particular IP number going through your Mail Server per hour. This detects and protects your system from mail bombs of various sorts. For Example you can;
- Restrict the number of messages per hour that DSMTP will accept from an IP number.
- Permit exceptions to number of messages per hour for certain IP numbers. This applies to the IP number of the sender.
Message Filtering - Spam Detection and Rejection:
This is a very powerful feature that allows you to specify reject or accept rules based on any words in the message headers and or anywhere in the bodies of messages. This allows you to easily build and tailor your own filter to eliminate many unsolicited mail messages and email from known Spammers.
DMail Robots :
Robots are programs that can perform additional functions and add new features to the mail server. DMail includes an auto-responder robot.
Integrated Email List Server and Broadcasting Facilities.

DMail Mail Server includes a fully Integrated List Server - for creating and managing email lists.
DMail Mail  Server's List Server Enables Users to use Mailing Lists and No-Maintenance Discussion Groups. A List server lets you set up automated mailing lists on the DMail Server. A list server allows mailing lists to be set up for users to share information about specific topics, projects, communities of interest and allows users to send mail messages to the mailing list so that the mail message is sent to all the users on the mailing list.  In addition  the DMail Server includes a Broadcast facility for sending messages to all users efficiently.

DMail List Server Features Include DMail List Server Features include:
- The ability to add user-defined "header" and "trailer" text and user-defined text strings to the beginning of the Subject line.
