This package contains avast! antivirus kernel. avast! is maintained by
ALWIL Software. The libavastengine is a part of the avast! for Linux/Unix
project (this library allows you high performance virus scanning inside
files and archives).

CONFIGURATION
=============
The avast! library uses the configuration file (avastengine.conf) to
hold the library settings. The file resides by default in /etc, but
location in /usr/local/etc and/or home directory is also supported
('~/.avastenginerc' or '~/.avastengine.conf' file in user's home
directory).
The user's configuration file can be created by running 'mkinstall -c'
installation script or by simply copying /etc/avastengine.conf file to
~/.avastenginerc and modiffing its values.
Prior to the configuration file, environment variables may be used to
configure the library. An environment variable name is the same as a
variable name from the configuration file, but it's uppercased
(e.g. AVAST4DATADIR).
Environment variables or the configuration file is read when the kernel
library is opened by a 3rd party application. So if you want a modified
value to take effect, the library must be reloaded. Short explanations
of the configuration file values and how to set environment variables
to take effect are described in a manual page.
Please read the avastengine.conf(5) manual page and the comments from
the avastengine.conf file for more information.

UPDATING THE VIRUS DEFINITION FILE
==================================

Updating the virus signature database is nessesary to keep your anti-
virus protection up to date. The avast! antivirus provides a perl script,
which checks for the latest virus signature file over the Internet and
takes care of its downloading (if a new definition file is available).
After downloading, `avastvpsreload' binary is automatically executed to
install the file and to initialize its reloading. After installaton,
`avastvpsupdate.pl' and `avastvpsreload' binaries are located in the
/usr/bin directory.
avastvpsupdate.pl also supports reading settings from a configuartion
file. avastvpsupdate.conf file resides by default in /etc, but location
in /usr/local/etc and/or home directory is also supported
(~/.avastvpsupdate.conf file in user's home directory). The configuration
allows to enable/disable updating of the VPS file and setup settings of
a connection through a proxy server. The configuration file is created
during an installation process.
The user's configuration file can be created by running 'mkinstall -c'
installation script too or by simply copying /etc/avastvpsupdate.conf
file to ~/.avastvpsupdate.conf and modiffing its content.

Note: the 'avastvpsupdate.pl' script uses Perl LWP module or wget to
download the updates. Therefore, it is necessary to have one of these
installed.

The virus definition automatic update:
--------------------------------------
It's recomended to automate updating the signature file using the cron
daemon. The cron will periodically run the `avastvpsupdate.pl' script.
Please, consult the crontab manuals to find how.

The virus definition manual update:
-----------------------------------

From a root prompt run:
/usr/bin/avastvpsupdate.pl

NOTICE: Please make sure you run avastvpsupdate.pl script as root or you
have your own avast! engine configuration including own 400.vps file,
otherwise it will not have filesystem permissions to upload the virus
definition file.
NOTICE: You don't need to restart any application using the avast! engine
library to reload the downloaded file. The `avastvpsreload' binary
executed from `avastvpsupdate.pl' script will upload the definition file.
