As a general guide, any number below 1000 should be ok, above that it depends
very much on hardware and operating system limits and bad things can happen so
avoid going excessively high initially...
Often when a limit is hit it's actually something else going wrong, so if
possible grab tellmail status when the issue occurs to see what is using up the
channels. But if the number of connections is reasonable/expected then
certainly push the limit higher as a first attempt at solving it.
