Hi Tom,
the SurgeMail migration facility is very convenient if you need to migrate users and want to avoid downtime, as SurgeMail will transparently handle
- users fetching email from the new server before all email has been migrated, and
- email being sent to the new server for users who have not yet begun migration.
However, it has limitations, it
- can't automatically migrate users that auth via CRAM-MD5, and
- has no way to extract and migrate aliases etc. from foreign mail systems.
You could consider scripting the process, using a non-interactive POP3 client (which can always use a plaintext password from your database) to trigger the migration for each user, and then set up the aliases via "tellmail add_user_alias" commands, etc.
BTW, if downtime is not an issue, I prefer to use the imapsync tool by Gilles Lamiral rather than SurgeMail's built-in migration facility, as it is more flexible and responds better to edge cases and errors. However, it doesn't support POP3.
